Here's a question (and sorry if you addressed it in the post, I mostly skimmed through after the first few paragraphs)... what's to stop these writers from posting their work on their own personal blogs as well? Would the teams/newspapers not only take the editorial rights, but the rights to those specific pieces or all work by that author as well?
